Málaga contains 100 municipalities. Besides the capital, its main cities are Vélez-Málaga, Antequera, Torremolinos, Fuengirola, Marbella, Estepona, and Ronda. The regions are: Antequera, Costa del Sol Occidental, Guadalteba, La Axarquia, Malaga, Nororma, Serrania de Ronda, Sierra de las Nieves, and the Valle del Guadalhorce. Malaga is the capital city of the Costa del Sol. Malaga today is a modern city and offers everything one can wish for life and holiday, culture and entertainment. The town is permanently expanding with huge developments. The population of Malaga is growing year by year. The Municipal project of a Metro (underground) system has started (30.0.2008). Malaga has also its large University Campus and an International Congress Center. Malaga has also an important big Port for commerce and tourism. Malaga is a wonderful place for sightseeing, visiting museums, to stroll out and enjoy drinks and tapas in the bars or a fine lunch or dinner in a typical Andalusian restaurant in one of the narrow streets in the old town center. Malaga has also important wide and clean beaches, mostly used by its inhabitants: El Candado, Banos del Carmen, San Andres, El Palo, Caleta, La Misericordia, Las Acacias and Malagueta. Málaga is firstly famous for being the birthplace of Pablo Picasso. The Pablo Ruiz Picasso Foundation (Fundación Pablo Ruiz Picasso) maintains a library and museum with a collection of works from international and Andalusian’s artists, including Ernst, Moore, Miró, Matta, Christo, Bacon, Tápies, Chillida, Plensa, Dokoupil and Guinovart. Nearby is the Casa Natal, the house where Picasso was born. The most outstanding monument is the Málaga Cathedral (La Manquit) built in the 16th century. Its style incorporates Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassic. A short walk from the Cathedral are the solid fortified walls of La Alcazaba. Below the entrance to the Alcazaba are the ruins of a Roman amphitheatre dating back to the 1st century. Above is a steep path that leads to the castle on the Gibralfaro hill. The gardens at the top are a perfect place to sit and take in the fantastic panoramic views. The Castle of Gibralfaro is a Moorish castle built in the 14th century. The remains are impressive and the place offers stunning views over the city, the port, and area. Inside the castle ruins is a military museum. The Paseo del Parque in the center of the city, next to the port, is a large avenue with a wonderful park with many palms and plane trees. Next to the Park is the Botanical and Historical Garden "LA CONCEPCIÓN". Another pace of interest are the “Cave of Nerja” (Nerja) and the “Cave of the Treasure” in Rincón de la Victoria. |
