This very tiny beautiful Andalucian village is just 20 minutes from Marbella. To reach it, leave the N-340 coastal highway 5 km south of Marbella just beyond the Hotel Puente Romano. The typicall Andalusian white painted houses contrasts impressively with the green slopes of the Sierra Blanca. Istan holds throughout the village many springs, flowing with fresh water. The origins of Istan date back to the 14th century.

The oldest and most important building is the parish church, built in the 16th century. Other buildings worth seeing are the cave and the Arab tower, situated at the highest point of the village. The originality of the village gives a timeless air that visitors find really impressing.

The streets are narrow and are not suited for vehicles. The only sensible way to explore the resort is on foot. In the center, on the market place are situated the church, a few bars and restaurants and a handful of shops. There is also a hotel, opened 1998.

The huge water reservoir, built in 1972, provides drinking water to towns all along the coast. The water feeding Istan's fountains is absolutely pure. The great natural environment is impressing. From the several lookout points (miradores), one can admire the majesty of the environment: the Mirador del Aufaifo; the Mirador de las Herrizas; the Mirador del Tajo Banderas ; and the Mirador de El Peñón.
