Estepona is located 75 km from Malaga airport and only 40 km from Gibraltar, set at the foot of the Sierra Bermeja mountains.
Originally a fishing village, Estepona has developed enormously. There are only some few high rise hotels and apartment blocks. The town has a much authentic atmosphere and maintains the feeling of an authentic Spanish town with international flair. In the old part of the town the streets are quite cobbled.
The port is a magic place, a mixture between an old Spanish port and modern international life. There are plenty of shops, bars, cafés and restaurants. Some disco pubs are around the marina.
Along the seafront runs a very pretty promenade lined with palm trees and flowers. There are some chiringuitos (beach bars) along this promenade. Its sea front promenade is widely considered to be one of the best on the Costa del Sol stretching from the town centre to the pleasure port at the western exit of the town.
In total Estepona has 22 km of coastline with beaches of fine sand. The beaches are excellent today, carefully maintained. All kind of beach and water activities are available. The beach front is today a modern area with bars, restaurants and beach shops. The majority of the beaches are equipped with all kinds of services.
Estepona is a perfect resort for families and people looking for a quiet holiday away from the busy nightlife and masses of tourists along the coast.
Places of interests are: The 18th century Church of Los Remedios in the Plaza de San Francisco was once a Franciscan monastery. The bull ring, on the outskirts of the town, has four museums, one has an interesting collection of bullfighting memorabilia.
Well worth a visit is the Selwo Safari Park where visitors can see exotic animals including lions, rhinos, giraffes and elephants up-close.
Estepona is a jewel of Costa del Sol, very distant from the masses of Torremolinos, Fuengirola, and Marbella.
